The International Mountain Running Youth Cup is the World’s premier competition for Under 18 Mountain Runners. For the last 12 years International teams from across the world have converged annually at mountain locations in Italy, France, Ireland, Bulgaria and Czech Republic to compete for this trophy.
I have been the England Team manager at the last six Youth Cups and have seen the benefit such an experience can bring to young athletes, the confidence born from the shared experience of international competition.
This event is all about developing and inspiring young people, be it international athletes, local athletes, local schools, clubs and communities.
It is planned that the FRA English Junior Championships will take place in the morning of the event followed by the international races, so Ambleside will be full of junior fell runners who can support England teams and be inspired by world class young athletes racing over Loughrigg.
On the Friday night, after the athletes’ parade and the opening ceremony, there will be an open, uphill-only time trial event on Wansfell, starting from Ambleside town centre next to the opening ceremony.
The cost to host the event, with approximately fifteen international teams of ten athletes for three days, will be around £30,000. The major costs are accommodation, food and transport to and from the venue from airports, with specialist race equipment, awards, media, athlete support/paramedic cover etc. adding to the cost.
All teams will be accommodated at Ambleside Youth Hostel and the race will be hosted by Ambleside AC.
A local Youth Cup 2020 committee has been set up, a non-profit group whose aim is to create a fantastic weekend of junior fell running, with opportunities to see and meet the best young fell and mountain runners in the world competing in Ambleside.
To do that we need to submit a strong bid to the World Mountain Running Association which will require clear evidence of the viability of such an event.
This bid process has been endorsed by British Athletics, England Athletics and the Fell Runners Association.
We need your support.
From individuals: we have a Just Giving page to help raise the funds we need.
From companies and groups: we are also looking for sponsorship with any partners interested in supporting an international outdoor sporting event in the Lakes, and have 3 levels of engagement bronze, silver and gold, depending on the contribution.
If anybody would like to find out more, please contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org or 07764610799.
I hope you can help us make it happen.
Many thanks, Duncan
